Airsoft Gearbox Guide: How It Works and What Breaks
How an airsoft gearbox works, the difference between V2 and V3, the five failures you will actually meet, and which upgrades are worth doing first.

The gearbox is the engine of an electric airsoft gun. It is the part that actually costs money, the part that eventually breaks, and the part that separates a $90 rifle from a $400 one — despite the two often looking identical from the outside.
Understanding it is the difference between owning a gun and being able to keep it running.
What a gearbox actually does
Pull the trigger on an AEG and a battery spins a motor. The motor turns three gears, which pull a piston back against a spring. At the end of the cycle the piston is released, slams forward, and pushes a column of air through the cylinder head into the hop-up — launching the BB.
That whole sequence happens roughly 15 times a second on full auto. Every part in the chain is under repeated shock loading, which is why gearboxes wear out and why build quality matters so much.

Gearbox versions explained
You will see “V2” and “V3” constantly. They refer to the shell design, and which one you have is decided by the gun platform rather than by price.

V3 is generally considered the more durable design, largely because the V2 shell has a known crack point around the cylinder window on cheaper castings. It is not a reason to abandon an M4 you like — plenty of V2 guns run for years — but it is worth knowing when you compare an AK against an AR at the same price.

The five failures you will actually meet
1. Stripped gear teeth
Usually caused by bad shimming — the spacing between gears — or by a motor set at the wrong height. Symptom: a loud grinding crunch and the gun stops cycling. This is the most common catastrophic failure.
2. Sheared piston teeth
The front teeth take the hardest load. On a full-plastic piston they eventually shear. Symptom: the motor spins freely but nothing fires. A piston with a metal front tooth largely solves this and costs very little.
3. Burnt trigger contacts
Every trigger pull arcs a small spark across the contacts. Over thousands of shots they pit and burn. Symptom: the gun fires intermittently or not at all. A mosfet prevents this by switching the load electronically instead of mechanically.
4. Air seal loss
The cylinder head O-ring, piston head O-ring and nozzle all have to seal. When one goes, FPS drops and becomes inconsistent. Symptom: your chrono readings scatter by 30+ FPS shot to shot.
5. Cracked shell
Mostly a V2 problem, and mostly on cheap pot-metal shells running a heavy spring. Symptom: velocity drops and the gearbox rattles. This is a replace-the-shell job, not a repair.
Upgrades worth doing, in order
Most beginners upgrade in the wrong order — buying a stronger spring first, which stresses everything else. The sensible sequence:
- Hop-up bucking. Not technically a gearbox part, but by far the biggest accuracy gain per dollar in the entire gun. Do this first, always.
- Air seal parts. A quality piston head, cylinder head and nozzle. Consistency beats raw power.
- A mosfet. Protects the trigger contacts, enables safe LiPo use, and often improves trigger response. See our note on batteries in the beginner guide.
- Piston with a metal front tooth. Cheap insurance against the second most common failure.
- Proper shimming. Free if you do it yourself, and it prevents the most expensive failure.
- Bearings or quality bushings. Only worth it once everything above is sorted.
- Spring — last. And only to hit your field’s limit, never past it.
What not to do
- Do not fit a heavier spring to a stock gearbox. You will accelerate every failure mode above and gain nothing your field will let you use.
- Do not dry-fire repeatedly. Without a BB to absorb the energy, the piston slams into the cylinder head at full force.
- Do not run full auto on a cold gearbox in freezing weather. Lubricant thickens and plastic gets brittle.
Should you open your own gearbox?
Eventually, probably yes — it is the single most useful skill in airsoft and it is not as intimidating as it looks. But two honest warnings.
First, the anti-reversal latch spring will fire across the room the moment you split the shell. Work inside a clear plastic bag or a deep box. Everyone loses one exactly once.
Second, the spring is under compression. Release it before you fully separate the halves, or the contents will redistribute themselves around your workspace.
If you are not ready for that, most fields have a technician, and a basic service is inexpensive relative to a new gun.
How this affects what you buy
Two rifles that look identical can differ by $200 of internals, and that difference is entirely gearbox. When comparing guns, look for: a quick-change spring system, a factory mosfet, decent bushings, and a brand with real parts availability.
