Under $300 is the most important price band in airsoft. It is where the quality curve flattens out — a $250 rifle is enormously better than a $90 one, while a $600 rifle is only modestly better than a $250 one.

Nearly every player on a field is carrying an AEG from this bracket, and most of them never need to upgrade.

Full metal receiver, quick-change spring system, a usable mosfet, and internals that do not demand immediate replacement — at money that used to buy a polymer body and a gearbox you would be rebuilding within a season.

The quick-change spring matters more than beginners realise. Adjusting to a field’s FPS limit becomes a five-minute job at the safe zone rather than a full gearbox teardown at home. If you play at multiple fields with different caps, this feature alone justifies the pick.

Watch out for: a genuinely confusing model range. SA-E, SA-C, SA-B and the EDGE variants overlap heavily. Confirm barrel length and whether your specific model includes the mosfet before ordering.

G&G Combat Machine CM16 Raider 2.0 — best for beginners

The gun that has introduced more people to airsoft than any other. Its enduring advantage is not specification but ubiquity: every technician has worked on one, every shop stocks the parts, and every common problem has a video walking you through it.

For a first gun, that support network is worth more than a slightly better gearbox.

Watch out for: the polymer receiver feels less substantial than metal-bodied rivals at similar money now. It is durable, just not premium-feeling.

CYMA AK platforms — best AK

CYMA punches well above its price on AKs specifically, and their full-metal-and-real-wood models look considerably more expensive than they are. The V3 gearbox used in AK platforms is generally considered more robust and easier to work on than the V2 found in M4-pattern guns.

Watch out for: quality varies by model rather than uniformly across the brand. Research the specific gun, not just the name.

Lancer Tactical Gen 2 — best under $150

If your ceiling is genuinely under $150, this is where to look. The Gen 2 line fixed most of the reliability complaints that dogged earlier Lancer guns, and many ship with a basic mosfet and a serviceable hop-up.

Watch out for: the most variable quality control on this list. Budget mentally for a hop-up bucking upgrade in your first season. A working gun you own still beats a better gun you are saving for.

What to prioritise under $300

Internals over externals

Rails, stocks, grips and optics are cheap to change later. A gearbox is not. Two guns that look identical can be separated by $150 of internals, and that is the difference you actually feel on a field.

A mosfet, if you can get one

A mosfet protects the trigger contacts from arcing and enables safe LiPo battery use. Many guns in this bracket now include one. It is not essential, but it meaningfully extends the life of the gun.

Quick-change spring

The single most useful convenience feature in this price band, for the FPS-limit reason above.

Gearbox version

V2 is the M4/AR pattern; V3 is the AK and G36 pattern. V3 is generally more robust and easier to service. Not a reason to change your mind on a gun you like, but useful context.

Parts availability

Buy a brand your local field’s technician recognises. An obscure gun with no parts supply is a gun you eventually throw away.
