• Does airsoft hurt?

  Being hit by an airsoft BB stings sharply for a second or two, roughly like a hard rubber band snap, then fades. Exposed skin at close range stings most; through a hoodie or gloves you often barely notice it. Full-seal goggles are non-negotiable, but the pain itself puts almost nobody off after their first game.

• How old do you have to be to play airsoft?

  Most fields set the minimum at 10 to 12 years old with a parent-signed waiver, and players under 18 generally need a guardian present or reachable. There is no single national age law in the US — the field sets the rule, and retailers usually require you to be 18 to buy.

• How much should I spend on my first airsoft gun?

  A first electric rifle you will not immediately outgrow sits between $150 and $300. That band buys a full metal gearbox, a hop-up worth adjusting and parts support when something wears out. Cheaper spring pistols work, but they are a backup rather than a primary. Budget another $80 to $150 on top for sealed goggles, a battery, a charger and decent BBs.

• AEG, gas blowback or HPA — which should I buy?

  An AEG (battery-powered electric) is the default first gun: cheap, reliable and legal at every field. Gas blowback pistols kick and feel realistic but lose power in the cold. HPA runs off an air line and is the most consistent and most expensive, and some fields cap it.

• Why will retailers not ship airsoft guns to New York?

  New York restricts realistic imitation firearms, and several cities go further, so most retailers simply block the whole state rather than police it address by address. New Jersey, Illinois, Michigan and a handful of cities carry their own rules. Check before you order, because a blocked order is usually cancelled, not rerouted.

• Do airsoft retailers charge different prices for the same gun?

  Often, and by more than people expect. Of the guns listed at more than one retailer here, the widest current gap is $400.00 on the same model. Stock is the other half of it — the cheapest listing is frequently the one that is sold out, which is why every price on this site is shown next to its stock status.
