AEG vs GBB vs HPA: Which Airsoft Gun Should You Buy?
Electric, gas blowback, high pressure air or spring. How each airsoft power system works, what it costs to run, and which one you should buy.

Every airsoft gun is powered one of four ways, and picking the wrong one is the most expensive mistake a new player can make. A gas rifle bought for winter play, or an HPA setup bought before you own a tank, is money you do not get back.

AEG — automatic electric gun
A rechargeable battery drives a motor, which drives a piston through a gearbox, which pushes air behind the BB. This is the default airsoft gun and what roughly nine out of ten players carry.
Why it dominates: reliability. AEGs work in rain, in cold, all day, on a battery that costs pennies to charge. Parts are everywhere, every technician knows them, and the platform scales from $90 to $700.
Trade-offs: almost no recoil, so the shooting experience is flat compared to gas. Gearboxes wear and eventually need service. Battery care matters — LiPo batteries in particular need a proper charger and should not be stored fully charged.

A note on gearbox versions
You will see “V2” and “V3” gearboxes referenced constantly. V2 is the M4/AR pattern, V3 is the AK and G36 pattern. V3 is generally considered more robust and easier to work on; V2 has a known weak point around the cylinder window on cheaper shells. Neither should decide your first purchase, but it is worth knowing when you buy parts.
GBB — gas blowback
Compressed gas — green gas, propane or CO2 — both fires the BB and cycles a moving slide or bolt. That movement is the entire point: GBB guns kick, the bolt locks back on empty, and they feel dramatically more like real firearms than anything electric.
Why people love it: realism, straightforwardly. For training-adjacent practice or pure enjoyment, nothing else compares.
Trade-offs: gas costs money and runs out mid-game. Performance drops noticeably below roughly 60°F, and in genuine cold a green gas gun will cycle weakly or not at all. More moving parts means more maintenance, and magazines are expensive — often a third of the gun’s price each.

Green gas vs CO2
Green gas is lower pressure, gentler on internals and cheaper per shot. CO2 is higher pressure, giving snappier blowback and much better cold-weather performance, at the cost of faster wear. For year-round play in a cold climate, CO2 is the practical choice; otherwise green gas is easier on the gun.
HPA — high pressure air
An external air tank feeds the gun through a line, with an inline regulator setting the pressure. Instead of a gearbox you have a pneumatic engine with far fewer moving parts.
Why players switch: consistency and trigger response. HPA delivers near-identical velocity shot to shot, an almost instant trigger, and adjustment to any field’s FPS limit by turning a dial rather than changing a spring. Rate of fire is tunable too.
Trade-offs: cost and the tether. You need the gun or conversion kit, a tank, a regulator and a line, which adds up quickly. You are physically connected to a tank on your back, which some players never get used to. Tanks need periodic hydrostatic testing, and not every field allows every setup.
Buy one if: you know you want maximum consistency and you have played enough to be sure. It is a poor first purchase and an excellent third one.
Spring
Manually cocked before every shot. No battery, no gas, nothing to fail.

Which should you actually buy?
- First gun, any situation: AEG. There is no serious argument for anything else.
- Sidearm: GBB pistol, or CO2 if you play winter games.
- Cold-climate year-round play: AEG primary, CO2 sidearm.
- You want the most realistic experience: GBB rifle, and accept the uptime cost.
- You want maximum consistency and have the budget: HPA.
- You want to shoot at 250 feet: spring bolt action, plus a sidearm.
